Call for Papers for the Annual Conference of the Association of American Geographers, Philadelphia 2004

Session Title : "Sights and Sites: The Exploration and Establishment of Visual territories"

Sponsored by the Historical Geography Specialty Group and intended for empirically or theoretically oriented research papers, this session investigates the importance of the visual in the ‘discovery’ and making of various material geographies. The Co-organizers, Gareth John (University of Kentucky) and John Paul Jones, III (University of Arizona), are interested in historical and current topics that require insightful connections to be made across a diverse range of social and discursive realms to draw out specific processes by which material and visual geographies come into being.

Themes might include but are not limited to:
-Visual epistemologies and material spatial practices
-Historical geography and exploration
-Historical cartography and the ordering of space
-Visual geographies of gender, race, nation, region
-Embodiment and visual and spatial practices
-Landscape and tourism history
-National and state parks, monuments, nature reserves
-The politics of inclusion/exclusion
-Iconographical/iconological and/or aesthetic theory
