medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture This is a complicated question due to the fact that modern usage has almost completely obscured the true meaning of "celibate" which is unmarried. Thus a celibate clergy is not necessarily a chaste one. Dyan Elliott, who is certainly the foremost authority on the subject, uses the term "spiritual marriage." I have made sporadic efforts myself to introduce the use of "encratic" (from the Encratites who disapproved of all sexual intercourse) to describe the sexually abstinent but it has never caught on. Thus the only word which seems to work is "continent" though it is more commonly pre-empted for other duties.
