In Essex we are looking to make our libraries easier for people to use We have installed storeguides in 9 of our larger libraries which use ordinary language rather than jargon to indicate what services and facilities are available The lists include - Audio Books CDs, DVDs and Videos Children's library Computers, Email and Internet Factual books Foreign languages Helpdesk Information Large print Library catalogue Local history News and Mags Novels Quick returns Youth We now wish to add pictograms to the textual lists and to use the pictograms on signage around the libraries in order to help all people but in particular people who have difficulty in reading the lists to find the service or facility in which they are interested Has anyone used pictograms in this way ? or does anyone know of any pictograms which are the accepted way of representing words such as are on our lists?
