Dear All,
I am forwarding this to the list on behalf of Chris Beacock
<[log in to unmask]>. Please include him in any replies as he is not a
member of this list.
Some of you maybe watching the discussion on Carto-Soc to which Chris has
responded:
"Many of you have suggested that there should an episode about cartography
now and in the future- much as I would like to include this as well, the
format of the show is quite rigid in that the BBC have commissioned a series
specifically about historical maps of Britain."
Best wishes
Tinho

Dear Members,

I am a cartographer- for the past 5 years I've been working as one at
Lancaster University- but now I have leapt into the world of television.
I've just started work for an independent TV company in Glasgow- Tern TV
have been commissioned by BBC2 to produce an 8 part documentary series about
cartography. Nicholas Crane is the presenter; the format of each episode
involves Nick investigating an important cartographer/ map/ atlas from UK
history. He makes a journey, based on the map he is studying, and along the
way he describes the cartographer's story, the methods used, the influence
that the map had, perhaps tries to produce a map of his own in the same
style. At the moment I am doing some initial research into subject matter
for the 8 episodes.

These are our initial ideas for the series:

Christopher Saxton's Atlas of 1577
John Ogilby's road atlas 1675
Greenville Collins: The Coasting Pilot 1693
The origins of the Ordnance Survey- General William Roy and the mapping of
the Highlands, 1746
William Smith's Geological map 1815
The London Underground Map- Harry Beck 1933
The retriangulation of Britain, MacLeod and the OS, 1935
Operation Sealion- maps for the possible German invasion of Britain, 1940

Would anybody like to comment on whether they think these subjects are
feasible, irrelevant, or if we have missed some important subject out
altogether? Are any of these topics a particular area of your research? Your
thoughts and suggestions are most welcome. Please feel free to forward this
message to anybody else who may be interested in the project.

Thanks for your help,

Chris Beacock
