Call for Papers for the Annual Conference of the Association of American
Geographers, Philadelphia 2004
Session Title : “Environment, Memory and Race”
This session has been sponsored by Cultural Geography Special Group and
has been organised for research papers that connect issues of environment
including nature, landscape, territory and nation and the histories of
racialised groups. These could include research on the role of
environmental values and histories as they are relevant to racialised
groups; the value of a race-sensitive environmental history; the links
between environmental history and race-histories; and work on
post-colonial groups and environmental histories and values.
Themes could include:
-American Environmental History and Race
-Historical geography and Race
-Migration History and Environmental Values
-Landscape History and questions of Race
-Transnational Environmental Histories
-Race and environmental practices (including issues of appropriation and
cultivation)
-History of Environmental Justice
-Environmental Philosophy and Race
-Environmental History of the Middle East
-Mobility, Race and Environmental Memory
