In response to the e-mail about life in the student-centred campus town of Loughborough: anyone worried about how we obtain milk, eggs or bread out of term-time can be rest assured that the 50,000 residents of the town have made contingency plans for when students disappear over the summer. Remarkably, economic and social infrastructure catering to self-proclaimed 'locals' has emerged in recent years, though there are rumours that the new Marks and Spencers food-hall will refuse to serve prawn sandwiches to anyone without an NUS card. More seriously, those interested in issues around sustainability and tension in student towns could look at the following EU project on student cities headed up by Antonio Russo (currently in Rotterdam): http://www.euricur.nl/themes/studentcity.htm
