William Empson famously defined ëpastoral' as ëputting
the complex into the
simple': that strikes me as a good instance of
sprezzatura, and incidentally a
good definition of it too.
I like Jon's connecting Empson with Castiglione and would only
add that in both conceptions the simple is understood as showing how
much complexity it isn't showing.
