medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture The distinction between saint Jereon (only venerated in the Northern Netherlands) and the other Geroen (Gereon), is most effective by the day of their feast. Gereon was martyr with Victor, Cassian and Florentius, and commemorated on the 10 October. His cult was apparently centered around the archdiocese of Cologne (which included Utrecht). The two are mentioned variably together on 10 Oct. (a major feast also in the diocese of Utrect). Gereon ende Victor, or Victor ende Gereon, even without Gereon as "Victor ende sijn ghesellen". The Dutch saint Jeroen (unfortunately called Hieron by Grotefend) was commemorated on the 17 August (Octave of St. Lawrence, also 18 Aug. in Haarlem), and had a special importance in the Northern Netherlands in the 15th Cent. where his name is written in red in the calendars. Spellings: Jeroen (Jeron), Yeroen, Geroen, Jheroen [in Latin: Jeronis martyris]. In the printed Missal for Utrect (1497) did the Octave of St.Lawrence have a Mass, but "Jeronis martyris" only a commemoration. Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche does only say that he "perhaps came from the British Isles" - an indication that it would be waste of time to speculate further in his origin. I doubt there ever has been any cult in whatever country he was supposed to be born in, all was concentrated in the Dutch area (Holland and Friesland). He is not mentioned in the common modern dictionary of saints. All Best Erik _____________________________________________________________________ Mag.art.
