medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (6. June) is the feast day of:

Gudwal (6th cent.) Gudwal was an abbot, an early Christian missionary in
Brittany.

Alexander of Fiesole (d. 590) Bishop Alexander opposed lay control in
ecclesiastical matters. When he refused to follow local noble wishes in
his church appointments, a group of the nobles had him drowned.

Agobard of Lyons (d. 840) A Spaniard by birth, Agobard went to Francia as
a refugee from the Moors in his youth. He became archbishop of Lyons in
813. He was a notable political figure, and also an important theological
and liturgical writer.

Norbert (d. 1134) Norbert was of noble blood, related to Germany's Salian
dynasty. He became a subdeacon and canon at Xanten and a typical
not-very-serious officeholder who got where he was based on family
influence. But in 1115 he was nearly killed in a thunderstorm and
experienced a change of heart. He became a priest, resigned his canonry,
gave away his goods, and got a papal license to become an itinerant
preacher. He attracted disciples, with whom he founded the monastery of
Premontre, the mother house of the Praemonstratensian order. The order
received papal approval in 1126, the same year N. became archbishop of
Magdeburg. He was formally canonized in 1582.

Gerard Tratorio (d. 1207) A layman of Monza (Lombardy), Gerard used his
wealth to found a hospital, where he worked with the sick, especially
lepers.

John Davy and companions (d. 1537) John Davy was a Carthusian deacon at
the Charterhouse in London, part of the small group of clerics in England
who refused to accept Henry VIII as head of the Church. He and his
companions were chained to a wall in Newgate prison and starved to death.
