With apologies for cross-posting ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear all, I'm pleased to announce the launch of the revised Study of the Records Lifecycle. The revised Study, researched and compiled by Elizabeth Parker of Emmerson Consulting Ltd on behalf of JISC consists of two main sections: an HEI Business Function and Activity Model and an HEI Records Retention Schedule. A Business Function & Activity Model is the essential basis for a functional approach to managing records, including the development of corporate file plans, records retention policies, vital records plans and the selection of records for permanent preservation as institutional archives. In addition to the online version a hard copy version of the Function and Activity Model has also been sent to every HE institution in the UK and should arrive today. The online version of the Study now available from <http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=srl_structure> has been designed to provide easy navigation between the Function and Activity Model and its related entries within the Records Retention Schedule. Producing the Records Retention Schedule in web format only will also allow us to keep its content up to date as legislation and other circumstance dictates. Some final links between the FAM and the retention schedule are still being put in place and should be completed over the next few days. It is hoped that by following the recommendations of this Study institutions will help to protect their interests, together with those of its stakeholders by ensuring that business records are kept for as long as they are needed to meet operational needs and to comply with legal requirements, and are then disposed of securely. However, it is important to note that the Study of the Records Lifecycle is not intended as a complete solution in itself and to recognise that a great deal of work still exists for every institution in turning this generic guidance into tools of relevance and practical value to individual institutions. It should also be noted that this work is only made available for adaptation and implementation for teaching, research and administration on a not for profit basis within Further and Higher Education institutions. No further reuse of this material or manipulation of its content for commercial gain is permitted without the express written permission of the copyright holders (see http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=srl_intro for full copyright statement). If you have any questions or comments regarding this project please do not hesitate to contact me.
