Martin Green is right to recognises this for what it is. This opens up an old debate. Generally overt advertising by ‘for
profit’ organisations on listservs is a no-no and this is only thinly
disguised. When I raised similar
concerns on a different JISC list, the list owners agreed that it was
reasonable for specific training courses, including those run by profit making
organisations, to be brought to the attention of subscribers but other forms of
commercial exploitation should be discouraged. It’s not clear that this particular
intervention meets these requirements.
Perhaps the list owners might like to look a little more closely. Otherwise there may well be an outbreak
of ‘me tooism’ from a different
perspective as others begin to tout their wares through the list.

Subject: TFPL FOI awareness
seminars
TFPL Freedom of
Information staff awareness programmes
It
is vital that your workforce is aware of the background to and the implications
of Freedom of Information (FOI) legislation.
TFPL
experts can work with you to develop customised content for a staff awareness
programme to ensure effective implementation . The programme may take the
form of briefing session presentations, including questions and answers, or
electronic content for your intranet, or a combination of both. We will
work with your internal experts to ensure that your own processes are reflected
in the content.
TFPL's
FoI Expert Adviser is Collin Crooks, who is responsible for implementing FoI in
a major government department and for introducing greater accountability and a
culture of openness. He is a member of the Government's FoI Practitioners
Group and serves on other working groups.
