Simon

Thanks for your reply... at the moment i am looking at all joints. So far
the reasearch i've found supports the use of modalities such as TENS,
low-level laser therapy and exercise - both on land and in water. Heat and
cold, as well as orthotics seem to give good results with these patients. I
have also considered some alternative therapies such as acupuncture but I am
still sceptical about their effectiveness. At the moment i am looking into
pulsed electromagnetic fields, shortwave and ultrasound, however I have
found very little scientific evidence for the use of ultrasound and I have
my doubts about the benefits of shortwave for OA patients. Do you have any
suggestions as to whether it would be possible to standardise a treatment
protocol for these patients and what modalities have been scientifically
proven?

Thanks
Paula
