Using XML for effective eLearning development
A one-day workshop from ALT

Date: 1 July 2003
Time: 1000 -1600
Venue: University of Oxford

Cost: Stlg 80 (ALT members), stlg 130 (non-members)
Booking deadline: 17 June 2003

Overview:
The aim of this workshop is to show how Extensible Markup
Language
(XML) and related technologies can be used in the production of
consistent, high quality learning materials that meet international
standards such as SCORM and IMS.
Various challenges in content production will be explored, along
with
suggestions as to how they can be met using XML within a well-
defined
workflow. Case studies will be used to demonstrate real
production
use of the technologies to create a flexible development process.

Topics to be covered:
* Controlling processes and using technology to meet challenges
in
content development
* An introduction to XML
* XML technologies, including XSLT and XML Schema
* Methods of content delivery, in particular the web and
IMS/SCORM
Reusable Learning Objects
* Future directions and opportunities

Expected outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, participants will have an understanding
of how XML technologies can be used to maintain high quality
standards for content, over a range of delivery methods.

Who should attend:
Anyone interested in the benefits XML can provide in content
production, or wanting to see the technology used in real-world
eLearning production.
Familiarity with HTML would be an advantage, but XML coding will
not
be expected.

Programme:
1000 Registration with tea and coffee
1030 Welcome and overview
1100 What is XML and why use it
1130 Using XML: a case study
1230 Lunch
1330 Exercise - design content model and create a simple schema
