medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture This kind of story belongs to the "Tumour in the whale" genre of long-standing myths, I think. Dale, Rodney, The Tumour in the Whale (London: Duckworth, 1978) A version I heard while working with Gurkha troops was An enemy (British, communist etc - take your pick from any foe the Gurkhas have confronted) meets a Gurkha and slices at him with a sword/bayonet etc. "Missed" shouts the Gurkha and then swipes with his kukri. "Missed" says the foe. "Nod your head" says the Gurkha and as the man does so his head falls off.
