Dear Colleague, Uppsala 2003-03-26

I am writing to you on behalf of The Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research. This is an international association of representatives of governments as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations initiated by Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson in 1998 to encourage, facilitate and coordinate activities on Holocaust education, remembrance and research. For additional information on The Task Force (ITF), you may visit its website at: http://taskforce.ushmm.gov/

One element of the Task Force's academic activity is to stimulate primary research about the Holocaust and encourage international exchange between scholars. One way of doing this is to inform ourselves of new and/or recently completed doctoral theses, or on-going post-doctoral research about some aspect of Holocaust history and memory or of National Socialist ideology or ideological issues or attitudes leading to National Socialist ideology. Therefore I have been given the task by the Task Force's academic working group, chaired by Professor Yehuda Bauer and assisted by Dr. Paul A. Levine, Uppsala University, to collect such information. Specifically, we wish for this overview to include all current Ph.D. candidates, recently completed doctoral dissertations, and on-going post-doctoral work in ITF member countries. (for a list of countries, please see below). It is our hope to compile a representative overview when the next plenary meets in Washington D.C. in mid-May 2003.

This letter appeals to you for help in compiling this important yet limited information. If you are either currently conducting research at the two levels indicated or are aware of someone doing so, would you please be so kind as to provide me with the information requested below, or pass this appeal to the relevant persons.

1) Your name and title

2) The title or preliminary title of your thesis or on-going research

3) Your current institution or other affiliation(s)

4) The name of your dissertation advisor (if you are a Ph.D. candidate)

5) If your research is a part of a larger project

6) A very brief abstract of your thesis

Obviously we seek to disseminate this information as widely as possible, so permit us to assume that if you have answered this letter, we may include the submitted information in the overview. At the moment it is not clear whether the results of this effort will be presented as a printed publication, an on-line database or both.

In order not to crowd the list I suggest that you anser me personally at [log in to unmask] I Thank you most kindly in advance for any help you can provide.

Sincerely
