Hi Ian, These are for gridmapdir (http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/gridmapdir/) There is a hard link say from %2fo%3dgrid%2fo%3dukhep%2fou%3dhepgrid%2eclrc%2eac%2euk%2fcn%3dsteve%20traylen to wpsix001. if you do a `ls -rti` in this directory things may be a bit clearer, hard links have the same inode number. They are created the first time a grid user comes in. A mapping is created so that the next time that person comes in they get the same pool account again. The string is case lowered and url encoded version of the users DN.
