Here's a small selection of UK lost record stories. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/604067.stm Research documents which chronicle one of Europe's most important Bronze Age excavations have been destroyed by fire - in a mouse nest. BBC 14 Jan 2000 -------------------------------------- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/295997.stm Police in Scotland have launched an inquiry after confidential medical records about the Queen and other senior members of the Royal family were discovered dumped by the side of the road. A ex-colleague's just secured a post handling Social Services access to records enquiries. Basically the enquiries were backing up as social workers were reluctant to spend time finding the records. The social workers are still involved with the final triage of the files and client meetings. The new post makes up for years of unmanaged secondary records storage. Staff that might have a good idea about office filing don't always have time to think through all the processes required to manage records off-site. And like Mike, I too have found filing cabinets transferred off-site following office mergers. The removal company made a pretty packet for monthly storage while no-one took responsibility for these. On the other hand, I've also generated a few timesheets preparing a company for relocation to a new site. An opportunity to roll out RM software to departmental records officers, push for sharing of corporate resources, review electronic record keeping - backed by management and architects' dreams for an uncluttered building.
