medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Or perhaps to allow access to the 'charged' interior of the tomb-space without disturbing it. A Catalan tomb-shrine I've worked on incorporated a 'fenestrella' through which devotees could pass cloths, rosaries, and so on, attached to sticks, in order for them to become secondary relics.

Best wishes

Graham

My guess is that it was to protect him from
relic-seekers. As I learned from this list recently,
people used to steal the railings around the
shrines/beds of Martin of Tours.
