medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear List-members,
Please forgive my pestering everyone with this question, but I am wondering
whether it was ever possible and/or probable to obtain a letter of
absolution from excommunication as an act of piety without having first been
excommunicated? I have an instance of a letter of absolution being granted
without any indication of prior excommunication. I'm wondering if I should
assume ipso facto that the people in question were indeed excommunicated?
Many thanks in advance,

June Mecham
