medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture The dialogue between Maurus and Benedict over who was responsible for the miracle of walking on the water and saving little Maurus is multifaceted. Gregory (the author) is showing Benedict and Maurus illustrating monastic virtues proper to an abbot and a community member. Maurus gives the abbot credit for the miracle, saying it was his command that initiated the act. Maurus said he didn't even know what he was doing (walking on the water). Benedict insisted, however, on giving Maurus credit, attributing the miracle to his prompt obedience. Placid settled the issue by saying he saw Benedict's cloak above him in the water, presumably protecting him. So a number of monastic virtues are stressed by means of this story. Early medieval commentaries on the Rule reasoned from this incident that it was permissible to argue with the abbot--so long as it was outside the monastery walls. :) jw -----Original Message----- From: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Chris Laning Sent: Tuesday, January 14, 2003 10:15 PM To: John Wickstrom Subject: Re: Saint Maurus medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture At 4:58 PM -0800 1/14/03, Marjorie Greene wrote: >medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture > >Maurus > is supposed to have walked (or >> rather run) on water to >> rescue a fellow novice at Benedict's command. >Saint Placidus by name. Yes, and St. Benedict is the one who gets the credit for the miracle -- not St. Maurus. :) -- _________________________________________________________ O Chris Laning | <[log in to unmask]> + Davis, California _________________________________________________________ ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
