medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Carolin

I wrote an unpublished doctoral dissertation (Oxford, 1984) on the
relations of the papacy with the religious orders in England in the first
half of the fourteenth century. While this won't be of much use for your
purposes (bits of it are in print as articles but are probably too
specialised for your undergraduate audience), I would recommend the
relevant chapter in ADM Barrell, `The Papacy, Scotland and Nothern England,
1324-1378' (Cambridge, 1995) and the articles he cites by Robin Storey and
AH Sweet. The essays in CH Lawrence (ed.), `The English Church and the
Papacy in the Middle Ages' (London, 1965)have useful material (esp. on the
C14 by Pantin). On relations with the episcopate, the chapter on
visitations in vol II of Knowles, `The Religious Orders in England', is
still good. The introductory sections of A Hamilton Thompson's volumes of
documents on episcopal visitation of religios houses published by the
Lincolnshire Record Society are invaluable, but probably too technical for
first-year undergraduates.

I have been working as a civil servant for some years and don't have as
much opportunity as I would like to keep up with current research, so
others may have more currecnt material to point out on the episcopate and
the C15 in particular.

I hope this is useful nonetheless.

Yopurs sincerely
Peter McDonald
