Dear Zooarchs,

I have a query from a colleague about a well preserved dog described below.
Can any work be done on the hair such as identification to breed?

A large dog said to be of greyhound/labrador size has been found on a site
in Southampton in Roman levels. It was very well preserved. He was wearing
a bronze collar around his neck which corroded and preserved quite a lot of
hair and skin all around the circumference of the collar, inside. The
dimensions of the collar are roughly 20cm in circumference and 5cm in width.

Many thanks
