Hello folks,

Currently our website offers an 'email this page to a friend' option at the
foot of many of our central pages, designed to allow clients of the site to
mail the URLs of interesting pages to other potentially interested parties.
For an example, see:

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/central/visitors.hti

This service presently allows the sender and recipient to be specified
without either authenticating the sender or asking permission of the
recipient.

As this service essentially offers an anonymous emailing service open to
anyone, we are concerned that it may contravene the new EU directive on
spam which comes into force on 11 December. This directive states: "Under
the new law, companies will have to get permission from an individual
before they can send them an e-mail or text message.".

Does anyone else offer such a service? If so, have they considered this
issue? And can anyone offer a solution other than either removing the
service or forcing the sender to register with the University?

There's a useful BBC article on this at

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3120628.stm

with relevant links. I note, by the way, that the BBC are still offering a
similar service and have included a disclaimer - will this be adequate?

Any advice gratefully received.

Regards,

Mike
