Please note the following vacancy for an EPSRC studentship. *************************** The Department of Geomatic Engineering and the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London are offering an EPSRC doctoral studentship to support research towards a PhD degree. The research will investigate location technologies to provide the basis for a continuous personal information system for people travelling outdoors, in vehicles and in buildings. The research will therefore involve working with various technologies such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS) and map-matching techniques, along with Bluetooth and iBean devices (http://www.millennial.net/content.cfm?section=2) to aim towards a seamless location/environment mapping system which will provide sufficiently robust location data to drive the personalised information system. The travel information part of the system is being investigated in a separate research project funded by EPSRC and Department for Transport which is concerned with the design and communication of travel information - the project proposed here is interested in the integration of these positioning and communications technologies on a hand-held device. Potential applicants should contact Jeremy Morley ([log in to unmask]) or Professor Nick Tyler ([log in to unmask]) urgently for further details. EPSRC Studentships cover fees and an annual stipend and are available to suitably qualified candidates who satisfy the residence criteria of the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1983. Citizens of EU Member States are eligible for fees-only awards. *************************** -- ************** Nick Tyler at the Accessibility Research Group Centre for Transport Studies, University College London Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)20 7679 1562; Fax: +44 (0)20 7679 1563 [log in to unmask] www.arg.ucl.ac.uk
