"A Excellent Hand for the Business":

John Hunter and the Art of Dissection
in Johnson's London

A lecture at Dr Johnson's House by Simon Chaplin

on Thursday 20th November 2003 at 7.30 pm

Simon Chaplin is Senior Curator of the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is currently researching the life of John Hunter (1728-1793), one of the leading surgeons and anatomists of late eighteenth-century London and founder of the College's Hunterian Museum. His talk will look at how Hunter's skill as a dissector helped to establish him as one of the most influential medical practitioners of his time.

Hogarth's Election Entertainment

A lecture at Dr Johnson's House by William Palin

on Tuesday 16th December 2003 at 7.30 pm

William Palin is Assistant Curator at Sir John Soane's Museum and Honorary Secretary of the Soane Monuments Trust. He has organised exhibitions on a range of topics relating to art and architecture including, earlier this year, John Flaxman 1755-1826: Master of the Purest Line.

Based on the notorious contest for the Oxfordshire seats in the General Election of 1754, the four canvases in William Hogarth's An Election series remain unsurpassed both as works of art and as graphic observations of the corruption and folly of mankind. In this illustrated lecture, the speaker takes fresh look at Hogarth's great paintings.

Seats are limited so you are advised to book early. Doors open at 6.45pm and the lectures start at 7.30pm. Guests will be able to look round the House after the lecture (approx. 1 hour). A glass of wine is included in the ticket price.
