Commission agrees vehicle type approval directive

The EC has agreed ideas for new technical laws for the auto industry.   Van, truck, trailer and CV bodybuilders will all be affected, as will bus, minibus, coach, and welfare bus makers.   The shake up for the UK bodybuilding business will be the biggest for decades, say the SMMT.    The ideas cover most existing laws in a new form and make way for new rules to extend type approval law to all commercial vehicles.   Anti-lock brakes, new and more efficient rear-view systems, including CCTV, sideguards to stop cyclists or pedestrians being dragged vehicles and spray-suppression devices will also be needed from January 2006.   The type approval laws will be phased by 2010 depending on the type of vehicle.

You can find the draft directive at www.europa.eu.int/comm/enterprise/automotive/pagesbackground/com_2003_418_final.pdf
