Dear colleagues, thank you for the various messages I got about the statistics describing the Iraqi pre-war situation and the possible effects of the war on its population. I summarise the main findings for the moment and ask help to go on the matter: 1) There is a enormous gap in macroeconomic data of Iraq. The World Bank and other international organisations offer no data from the last years. UNDP gives no indicators about Iraq in its last Human Development Report, but a few qualitative remarks about the worsening of the situation as measured by the Millenium Development Goals. There is a Human DEvelopment Report on Iraq issued in 1995 but I haven't access to it. Could anyone help me? 2) Health and Health expenditure Indicators are available in the World Health Organisation , as well as in the UNICEF website. A very good report is found at www.unicef.org/reseval/iraqr.html. Would anyone with expertise in health statistics be willing to make a summary of the main findings? 3) a report by Geoffrey Heard (sent by Robin Rice) suggests the war is a punishment to Iraq's unilateral decision of trading oil in Euros and not in Dollars which would cause dramatic consequences to UN economy. I have found for the moment no statistical evidence related to that fact. 4) I have asked Faisal Awartani, coordinator of the El Khowarizmi committe on statistical cooperation in the Arab Countries of the International Statistical Institute, to help us to gather statistical information on the subject.
