Dear all, I am a new member of the RADSTATS list, working both in an public statistical institute and the University. I have always wondered about how statisticians can help building a better society, and finding Radical Statistics has given me some hints. Recently, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that 'Spanish people are changing their minds about Iraq's war since oil prices are decreasing'. I think that this dangerous and false kind of statements have to be contested with statistical figures. In that sense, I would like to prepare a non-specialist, collaborative statistical work to inform the wider public on causes and dramatic consequences of the war on the living conditions and economy of Iraq and the rest of the world, and the aim of this message is to launch that work (which is maybe being undertaken elsewhere). The following data can be worthy: - western development aid to Iraq - social indicators of Iraq (including social expenditure) - foreign trade and investment related to the Iraqi economy - evolution of oil prices and their components - military expenditures - public opinion in different countries I welcome anyone interested in such collaborative work and thank the comments on the indicators that could be gathered on the subject.
