APOLOGIES for crossposting Health Statistics Users Group Conference Thursday May 1 Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre, City University, Northampton Square EC1 Maternity statistics a mayday call? At a time when many changes are taking place in maternity statistics through out the United Kingdom, the Health Statistics Users Group is organising a conference on the subject. The day will give people involved in producing and using statistical information about maternity care an opportunity to get up to date with recent developments and discuss what is needed for the future. The day will start with updates on developments in the way information about maternity care is compiled at a national level in each of the four countries of the United Kingdom and on progress with the review of birth and death registration in England and Wales. It will go on to look at the information needs for policy developments, including the National Service Framework and changes in confidential enquiries into infant and maternal deaths. The final session will consider whether there are unmet needs, for example in providing the information needed to inform service users and producing statistics about normal births. A full programme and list of speakers will be available shortly. Speakers confirmed so far include Nirupa Dattani from the Office for National Statistics, Lesz Lancucki from the Department of Health, Jim Chalmers from ISD, Scotland, Martin Machran from the NHS Information Authority, Miranda Dodwell from BirthChoiceUK and Soo Downes from the University of Central Lancashire.
