Months ago I noted down (literally on the back of the proverbial
envelope) these sentences from Thomas Merton: 'It is vanity to desire
anything that is past. The misery afterwards was, of course, a luxury.'
Atypically, I've failed to list the source work; as I now have to prepare
footnotes for a publication in which I use this quote I'm in need of your
collective memory. Google has failed me.
