Dear all,

I'd second what Catherine and Michael have said. In my own accent of British
English, which is a bit of a mixture of southern English and northern
English influences, I definitely use a stressed article with schwa before a
consonant, but with [i] more likely before a vowel. I'd also use [@] for 'a'
in stressed position, as Catherine notes. The general [@] usage in 'the' I
would only expect to hear from an American, and I think I do associate it
more with the West Coast.
