Dear colleagues

Some of you will remember my posting earlier this year about researching models of interpreting, which was to inform a DoH project. The project has formally commenced, with a slightly revised brief – please see attached background.  It is an important project as it will inform the way in which the DoH advises NHS Trusts in the provision and language and communication services.  It will also help to inform the development of a national translation and interpreting services through NHS Direct.

We are hoping to talk to a range of language and communication service providers and well as projects and researchers, whose work will help to influence and shape the outcomes from the study.

The brief is to:

1.      provide an assessment of different delivery models and their economic viability;

2.      identify transferable delivery models which, if deployed more widely in  the NHS would result in a robust, affordable and comprehensive service for people with a variety of communications support needs;

3.      describe key indicators for successful language service provision,   including systems and structures for matching resources to need, ensuring those providing the service follow established principles of access and ensuring affordability.

I’d be very grateful to receive any feedback from members about:

*      Your experience / knowledge / involvement in relevant good practice in this area which it would be useful for us to pursue.

*      Useful contacts.

*      Issues that you feel need to be taken into account and built into this work from your perspective.

If you’d like us to contact you directly to speak to you please send you contact details.

Regards

Mike Silvera
