Hello all - long time no correspond!

I have a book published by James Fairley, Shafto House, Chester-le-Street, and printed by Tyne Printing Works Co. in 1896. Its author is W Fairley, PhD, FGS, Mining Engineeer, and it's entitled "The Practice and Science of Mining Engineering - a Manual adapted for the use of Mine Owners, Mining Engineers, Colliery Managers, Mine Foremen, Mineral Surveyors, Mining Students and Practical Miners! W Fairley is described as Certificated Colliery Manager under the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1872, and as the author of, in addition to the works mentioned by David, Roger and Tony, "Notes on a Visit to Saxony" and "Geologische Bemerkungen uber Dean Forest und Umgegend" (another interesting one for Ian Pope?). The author's preface is dated 1 Feb 1896.

Chapter headings (some condensed) are: Geology; Properties of minerals, their mode of occurrence and prospecting methods; Practical mining operations; Properties of air and gases and principles of mine ventilation; Mechanical work performed by pneumatic machines in mine ventilation; Mechanics; Wire and wire ropes - characteristics, uses etc.; Mining arithmetic and mathematics; Land and mine surveying; and Miscellaneous subjects.

The content takes the form of 1065 questions with answers, some of which are attributed to examination centres, and the book contains a number of line drawings, diagrams and tables. It also has an appendix entitled "Mechanical Ventilation" which includes a "List of Waddle Fans erected and worked at the Coal and Iron Mines of Great Britain" - number of fans supplied, diameter, and 'To whom supplied, or to what colliery'. The 'answers' include lots of references and information about furrin' parts e.g. ventilation law in different US states and Canadian provinces.

vii + 366 pages, including list of illustrations and index. Quite interestin'.

regards

James
