Ecton copper mine pumped by a 33ftx6ft waterwheel from 1823. It worked to a depth in excess of 600 ft until c. 1856. There were probably 3 lifts, maybe 4. It replaced a water balance engine where water filling a large tub lifted the pump rod. In fact there were two of these, one for the pumps the other one for haulage, both working by the 1780s.
