  Cruquius is the latinised version of Kru(y)ckuis. This familiename
is probably derived from a sign hanging from the house (this might
also be an inn) where the familie lived.
It is common to nickname buildings and other structures so that might
be the reference to 'octopus' (though I think something like 'spider'
would be more appropriate, with a low fog the pumpingstation must
have looked like that moving through the (flat) landscape)
