The International Conference on the Scientific Basis of Health Services
is a biennial conferenceseries that began ten years ago in the U.K.,
and has since been hosted by the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia.
The 5th conference will be in Washington, D.C., September 20-23, 2003,
co-hosted by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ)
and AcademyHealth. The
series provides an international forum for the exchange of research and
experience on the use of
health services research to improve access to and the quality of
healthcare systems. Its focus is
on the process of promoting the use of scientific evidence for clinical
practice, health services
management and health policy. The co-chairs of the 2003 conference are
Don Berwick, M.D.,
Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Karen Davis, Ph.D., The
Commonwealth Fund.
Submit an abstract on one of the following conference themes:
1) National Strategies for Organizing Health Services Research
2) Using Evidence to Improve Clinical Practice
3) Using Evidence to Improve Health Services Management
4) Using Evidence to Improve Policymaking
5) Using Evidence to Alleviate the Burden of Specific Diseases:
Mental Health, Cancer, Cardiovascular, Maternal and Child Health, and
HIV/AIDS
Abstracts are invited for the following categories:
* Call for individual papers. Abstracts not selected for paper
presentation will be further reviewed for poster presentation.
* Call for panels. Provides researchers an opportunity to collaborate
with colleagues and submit a proposal on themes one through four that
includes a brief overview of the panel and individual abstracts from
the presenters. Individual abstracts not
selected for panels will be re-reviewed for poster presentation.
* Call for posters. Solicits abstracts for the poster program. The poster
program is an
effective mechanism for research dissemination and networking.
All abstracts undergo blind peer review. Abstracts selected for
a session or a poster presentation will be posted on the Conference
web site in May.
