PARIP 2003 - A REMINDER

NATIONAL CONFERENCE: 11-14 September 2003

SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE: 31 JANUARY 2003

OUTLINE

PARIP is a 5-year AHRB project that investigates creative-academic issues
raised by practice as research in the cognate fields of film, television,
dance and theatre. In other words, PARIP explores the wide range of
performance practices - from devised theatre to modelling new approaches to
documentary film making to experiments in stage design to digital
choreographies - that are taking place in a Higher Education environment
and are described as research activities and outcomes.

The national PARIP conference takes place between 11 and 14 September 2003
at the University of Bristol. There will be places for 200 delegates and
presentation opportunities by 60 of these. Additionally, there will be
evening spaces in the Wickham Theatre for longer screenings/performances by
practitioners who would prefer a wider, less formal audience for their work.

PARIP is now calling for proposals that address the 6 themes chosen
collaboratively by the various PARIP communities throughout the UK:

1.      'How does 'practice as research' problematize notions of 'professional'
and 'academic' practices?'
2.      What might be the various epistemologies of and knowledges generated by
practice as research?
3.      What kinds of resourcing/plant/infrastructures are needed for practice
as research?
4.      What makes an instance of practice 'count' as research? Does practice as
research involve different methods as a result of its framing as research
as distinct from 'pure' practice?
5.      How might the multiple locations of practice-as-research knowledges be
conceptualized and assessed/evaluated/judged? And who decides?
6.      Must practice as research include some form of disseminable 'reflection'
or is the practice in performance/screening contexts sufficient to stand as
research outputs? What might be the role of documentation across media?


The conference will build on the 2001 PARIP symposium to provide space for
multi-modal presentations focused on specific practices and themes. In
other words, the conference is intended to demonstrate that questions
accruing around practice as research per se can be explored through
specific performance practices - dance, film, TV, theatre, radio, digital
arts, etc. - in addition to critical writing practices. Therefore, we
particularly welcome submissions that propose to address the above themes
across the range of performance practices, as well as through critical
writing practices.

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE

The conference will comprise a mix of keynotes and extended workshops that
are intended to provide every delegate with the opportunity to explore in
depth each of the six themes. Performances / screenings / demonstrations /
papers will be embedded within the workshop structure. Each workshop will
be comprised of 3 elements: a 45-minute-long performance / screening /
demonstration by an individual or group; a 15-minute-long performance /
screening / demonstration / paper by an individual or group; and an
hour-long discussion. PARIP regional fora are also organizing a number of
sessions.

Delegates will be assigned (on an alphabetical basis) to a discussion group
of approximately 30 participants. These groups will meet each afternoon to
discuss the workshops attended by individuals in the group in order to
develop key themes to be fed back to the plenary discussion hours at the
end of each day. By the close of the conference it is anticipated that
these groups will have identified a number of points of action which may be
taken forward by PARIP.

Evening performance/screening events are also being organized to inspire
further discussion and collaboration. There will also be ample time to
socialize, with a planned conference dinner and other gatherings.

PROCESS OF SUBMISSION, EVALUATION AND ACCEPTANCE

We invite you to send us proposals in a range of media - from 2 sides of
written text on A4 paper to still images, audio recordings, short videos,
CD/DVDs, websites or other multi-media. People presenting should be working
in a UK context. Please indicate whether you or your group propose a long
(45-minute) or short (15-minute) presentation. Please contextualize your
presentation in terms of the thematic structure of the conference and
indicate to which media/disciplines your practices make reference.

If you wish to be considered for one of the evening screening/performance
slots, please send a proposal that outlines any technical requirements and
broad outline of how your proposal relates to the specific conference
themes.

The deadline for submission is 31 January 2003.

Submissions will be assessed by the inter-institutional PARIP Advisory
Group according to three main criteria:

1.      Relation between submission and conference themes
2.      Diversity of practices in relation to the field of submissions as a whole
3.      Consideration will also be given to ensuring that there is a working
balance among: relative seniority of artist-scholars; regions; practices;
and other differences/abilities


While PARIP asks that presentations address and extend the themes
identified, it is also keen to facilitate the wide range of practices that
take place in the UK under the umbrella term 'practice as research'.
Therefore, PARIP will consider proposals outside of its core disciplines of
theatre, dance, film and television.

Feedback from the Advisory Group will be made available wherever possible.
Successful participants will be informed by 31 March 2003.
