Museums and broadband internet

The Resource managed Portable Antiquities Scheme www.finds.org.uk is working closely with the British Museum and the BBC on ideas around a BBC2 TV series to be broadcast in the autumn, called 'Hidden Treasures'. This will tie in with a British Museum exhibition that will tour the country in 2004-2005.

We are thinking about running a number of archaeological finds identification events, where people would be able to bring along their finds, have them identified and record them on the Portable Antiquities Scheme website, as well as having them displayed on the BBC website.

We would like to identify those museums with public internet access that may be interested in hosting such an event, or who work closely with another organisation that has internet access. The details are still being worked out, but it is likely that two or three machines, on a broadband connection, would be needed. The event would probably be co-ordinated by a regional Portable Antiquities Finds Liaison Officer and would be accompanied by a marketing campaign.

If you think that you may be able to offer these facilities, and may be interested in taking part, then please email [log in to unmask]
