Training the Trainer

The Course
The workshop is aimed at information and library staff who are expected to
train others in the workplace and who are new to training or looking for
new, more effective approaches to learning.

The seminar will be participative throughout. In the initial sessions
participants will explore the theory and practice of workplace training and
coaching. This will be followed by the opportunity to design a training
session on a topic of the participant's choice.

Seminar Content
Topics to be covered will include:
•       The trainer-learner relationship
•       Setting aims and defining learning objectives
•       Ensuring learner buy-in
•       Generating rapport and maintaining interest
•       An overview of learning styles
•       Barriers to learning
•       How to structure a course
•       Planning an individual session
•       Sequencing learning material
•       Knowledge acquisition versus skills development

•       Linking learning points effectively
•       The importance of questions
•       Giving feedback
•       Tips on use training equipment and aids
•       The importance of evaluation
•       Pre- and post training assessment

Your facilitator Sheila McCullough has worked in a variety of public and
academic libraries in Scotland and overseas. As Head of Library &
Information Science at Edinburgh's Telford College she managed programmes
for the education and training of para-professional staff throughout the
UK. In 1991 Sheila set up her own training and consultancy firm,
specialising in delivering training in the library and information sector.
