The Radical Library: taking up the challenge
Thursday 13 November 2003, London

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's no news that libraries and library services in the academic sector are
changing fast, but this seminar brings together practitioners from within
and beyond universities to give some real life examples of radical
developments taking place now.  Speakers will show how even large research
libraries are increasingly relying on electronic-only access to the journal
literature, how the explosive growth in student numbers beyond the
traditional full-time campus-based 18-21 cohort is transforming services,
how the library building (if it’s still called the ‘library’) is changing
beyond recognition, and how provision is now tailored much more closely to
demand.  There will also be a look at these advances from the publisher’s
point of view, and two well-respected figures – Bob Campbell of Blackwell
Publishing, and Michael Breaks of Heriot-Watt University – will top and tail
the day with wide-ranging and controversial presentations giving their views
on the current position and future trends in information demand and supply
for teaching, learning and research.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Both for library staff and for those publishers and other intermediaries
whose livelihoods depend on a close knowledge of trends in the academic
library world this one-day seminar is a great opportunity to hear about,
comment on and discuss some of the leading edge developments actually taking
place now in that world, and to consider how these changes will affect their
plans for the future enhancement of their own services or products.
