Hi,

Ever since SD started digitizing its backfiles their green "subscribed"
icons have less and less meaning for us, as they are showing next to
journals, that we don't have rights to access the full text of because
our license only gives us access to 1995 (1993 for Academic Press
titles) onwards, and because we haven't purchased any SD backfiles.

e.g. Journal of Molecular Liquids - this journal runs from Vol. 25
(1983) - date. It was formerly known as Advances in Molecular Relaxation
and Interaction Processes Vol. 10 (1978) - Vol. 24 (1982) which was
formerly known as Advances in Molecular Relaxation Processes Vol. 1
(1967) - Vol. 9 (1977)

When browsing the list of titles on SD the green "subscribed" icon is
appearing not only next to the current title, where we do have some
access rights, but also next to the former titles, which if they are pre
1995 we have no access to.

I raised this issue with SD in September 2002 when it first became
apparent the subscribed icon was appearing next to titles we had no
access. I was informed that they were looking into the problem of
unsubscribed titles showing up as subscribed and accepted that this was
confusing for users. So far the problem has not been rectified.

Whilst we would like access to the backfiles we can't justify the cost
for our institution, as we don't believe that the usage will justify the
costs of purchase in our particular institution, where research is not
our primary role. It's a pity that SD don't allow us to lease the
backfiles rather than have to purchase them outright, as we can't be the
only institution that can't justify their purchase at the moment.

Cheers
Lesley
