I am aware of an 'updating' issue with Adobe where it periodically pops up with a message when you try and open a .pdf file and asks if you want to check for any updates, however this pop up doesn't always appear at the front, it often 'hides' itself and can only be 'found' by doing ALT and TAB and selecting the adobe icon, once you click on NO/CANCEL the document should launch as normal. If you don't do this it does appear that the document is blank. This would also explain why an upgrade to XP got rid of the problem as the system was no longer prompting you to look for an upgrade. However, the problems only existed with some service providers (and, like you, on some machines, some days!). We never really got any satisfactory reason from anyone.
