CILIP GOES TABLOID WITH NEW FORTNIGHTLY MAGAZINE

Library+Information Gazette will have 12 pages of jobs plus news, features and much more - all free to CILIP members

CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, is to launch a new fortnightly tabloid magazine from next January. Replacing the present Appointments, the new Library+Information Gazette will include news from CILIP, information on products and services, careers features, a full events calendar and 12 pages of library and information jobs.

Branch and Group news will feature strongly in the new Gazette, which will have a total of 24 pages each fortnight. "At last, CILIP Groups and Branches will get the space they need," said CILIP's Director of Enterprises Janet Liebster, announcing the new publication at the Umbrella conference in Manchester last week.

Gazette's editor Debby Raven agrees. Urging CILIP members to submit material for the new magazine, she said: "Branches and Groups should look upon the Gazette as their own. It will be an additional way in which they can reach their members, and CILIP members as a whole, every fortnight. "

Gazette should also be a good revenue earner for CILIP. "The tabloid format means that there will be more space for advertisers, and hence more income for CILIP," commented Head of Advertising Andrew Nelson-Cole, showing members a mock-up of the new magazine.

Meanwhile, CILIP's existing monthly Library+Information Update will also continue to evolve. As it will no longer be carrying advertising from January there will be more space for substantial news items and for analysis of the issues behind them, as well as strong feature coverage.

In answer to questions, Janet Liebster confirmed that both Gazette and Update will be supplied direct to all members as a core member benefit. Nor was there any threat to Branch and Group journals and newsletters. "Gazette will give Branches and Groups the opportunity to report their activities more widely among the CILIP membership," she commented. "It should be good for member recruitment and retention."
