Also there would be problems with http transfers using globus-url-copy, I have never found a way of making this respect a web proxy. In the past LHCb have made use of globus-url-copy and http for sucking jobs in. And also the orginal gridpp map ran a webserver on 2811 as well to avoid this problem, 2811 being needed for GridFtp anyway.
