The study of mental retardation encompasses varied approaches ranging from
biological to social sciences. Given the nature of mental retardation, the
psychological approach has obtained a central position because of its
ability to relate etiologic conditions to their behavioural manifestations.
Psychologists also have a basic interest in the psycho-educational guidance
of individuals with mental retardation.

The European Conference "Psychological Research and Theory on Mental
Retardation and Cognitive Developmental Disabilities" was established in
1996 as a forum for the exchange of scientific research on psychological
aspects of mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. The
aim of the conference is also to promote scientific networking in Europe.

The conference is structured by three types of activities: Two invited
addresses presented by international experts, oral presentations with
in-depth discussion and poster sessions. Oral presentations will be 30
minutes. In order to permit a detailed and useful discussion, 10 minutes are
reserved to this purpose.

Dates: May 27th-29th, 2004

R.M. Hodapp (Peabody College & Vanderbilt University, USA) and
S. Vicari (Pediatric Hospital,Bambino Gesù, S. Marinella, Rome).
