Research Officer

Social Science for the Environment, Virtual Reality and Experimental
Laboratories (SSEVREL)
Zuckerman Institute for Connective Environmental Research

Applications are invited for a Research Officer post in the 5* rated School
of Environmental Sciences to work with Dr Andrew Lovett, Professor Ian
Bateman, Dr Andy Jones and other faculty members. The post is available
for 3 years (in the first instance), from March 2003 to help initiate,
maintain, and facilitate research use of the SSEVREL facilities in the new
Zuckerman Institute for Connective Environmental Research.

The successful candidate must possess sufficient computing expertise to
help maintain the SSEVREL equipment, and would ideally have experience of
using visualisation software and the design of computer-administered
questionnaires. Knowledge of a programming language such as Visual Basic,
the development of web pages, statistical analysis methods or geographical
information systems (GIS) would also be relevant. An appropriate
background in social sciences (e.g. with the ability to organise decision
making experiments or run focus groups) would be advantageous. Good
organisational skills, confidence in interacting with a wide range of
people, an ability to work independently, and the capacity to make an
immediate contribution to the development of SSEVREL are essential. We
anticipate that the successful applicant will have a relevant postgraduate
degree (preferably a PhD), but will consider other candidates who can
demonstrate a particularly appropriate background.

Salary will be on the Research Grade II scale up to £28,498 (dependent on
experience).
