I do believe that you are talking out of your arse!!!!

For one America has been in a recession alot longer than the rest of us
because of the Sept 11th effect and secondly the US has loads more GIS jobs
than the rest of the world. Just by looking at GIS Jobs Clearinghouse I can
tell that.

recession.  I've been advised that I need to get to know as much database
analysis and programming as possible because GIS won't pay anything in the
long-run.

Also, we should stop using the 'recession' as an excuse why things are bad.
I don't remember when we were NOT in a recession and I'm sick of that label
because labelling the situation like that doesn't pay my bills.
