The National University of Ireland, Galway has created 5 posts for the

new Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences which has been formed by an

amalgamation of Geology, Geophysics and Oceanography. The posts are in

the following disciplines:

 

Lectureship in Physical Oceanography  (permanent)

Lectureship in Chemical Oceanography (permanent)

Lectureship in Geophysics (3 year contract)

Lectureship in Environmental Geology (permanent)

Lectureship in Palaeostratigraphy (permanent)

Applications are invited for the following positions at NUI Galway

 

Lectureships in Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences

 

As part of a strategic decision by the University, a new Department of

Earth and Ocean Sciences will be formed and incorporate the existing

Departments of Geology, Oceanography and the Applied Geophysics Unit. 

The new department, which will be unique in Ireland, will

·    Teach a new denominated degree in Earth and Ocean Sciences as well

as existing teaching commitments for example in Geology, Marine Science

and Environmental Science.

·    Promote excellence and innovation in research within the fields of

the new department, namely Geology, Geophysics and Oceanography.

·    Develop inter- and trans-faculty field based degree programmes

.

The new department will initially comprise 10 academic staff, 4

technical staff, 1 secretary, with additional part-time lecturers,

emeritus professors, post-graduate and post-doctoral positions.

Researchers may have access to research vessels with nearshore to

deep-sea capabilities, high resolution marine acoustic equipment,

surface-scanning electron microscope, Raman microscopy, advanced

computer facilities and geochemical analysis. Successful candidates will

assist with the development and implementation of new undergraduate and

postgraduate courses including field courses, conduct research in their

fields of expertise and contribute to departmental administration

duties.  All candidates should hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment

and have demonstrated research abilities. Teaching experience would be

an advantage.  Preferences, where these exist, for particular research

strengths are as follows:

 

 

Lectureship (Fixed Term) in Geophysics

An interest in Marine Geophysics may be an advantage. Appointment is a

three-year contract lectureship below the bar.

 

Salary:

Lectureship (Fixed Term):        EUR29,267.44 x 10 = EUR41,506.32
