Oceanic Intraplate Volcanism A Discussion Meeting co-sponsored by the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Geophysical Association First Circular Organizers: Dr Tim Minshull (Southampton; [log in to unmask]), and Professor Tony Watts (Oxford; [log in to unmask]) Summary: This two-day meeting will explore observations and models of oceanic intraplate volcanism. The meeting will address observational constraints on regional depth anomalies, crustal structure, vertical motion history, and age, and also the underlying plume dynamics and models of mantle convection. We hope that the meeting will bring together a broad spectrum of researchers studying processes at the surface, in the lithosphere, and in asthenosphere beneath oceanic intraplate volcanoes. Meeting Format: The meeting will take place at Burlington House in central London on 12th and 13th February 2004. Each day will commence with coffee at 10:00 and will be divided into morning and oral afternoon sessions. Each session will focus on a specific sub-topic and be kicked off with a keynote talk from an invited international speaker. Keynote speakers include: Paul Wessel (Hawaii) "Intraplate volcanism, plate motion, and the state of stress in the oceanic lithosphere" Neil Ribe (Paris) "The Hawaiian plume: what do surface observables tell us?" Francis Albarede (Lyon) "Local vs global rates of mantle mixing and geochemical contrasts between OIB and MORB sources" Poster contributions are also welcome. An admission fee of £10 (£5) will be charged at the door; the fee is waived for members of the Royal Astronomical Society, the British Geophysical Association or the Geological Society of London, and for invited speakers. Abstracts: Abstracts should include title, authors and their affiliations, and up to one side of A4 text using a 12 pt Times Roman font and 1" margins. Abstracts should be e-mailed to the convenors as Word or PDF documents with an indication of whether an oral or poster contribution is preferred. The abstract deadline is 14th November 2003. Web Site: A web-site is in the process of being constructed. Details will be posted at : http://www.ras.org.uk/html/meetings/RAS2003.html
