With the objective of investigating the full sequence of occupation and exploring the rich evidence for daily life from the first archaeological interventions of 1893 down to the origins of the town in the Late Iron Age in the 1st century BC, the project began in 1997 and is now in its seventh year. It is expected to continue until at least 2009. The project is directed by Professor Michael Fulford and Amanda Clarke and, with the support of the Arts and Humanities Research Board employs a full-time technician, Klare Tootell. In addition to students of the University of Reading, the six-week excavation season attracts a wide range of participants from the UK and overseas. The project has produced a range of academic and popular publications and supports a developing website which draws on the rich and developing database of site and finds records (www.silchester.reading.ac.uk)
